What was the best vacation you ever had?
I can tell you what mine was. The year after I divorced I wanted a very special healing sort of holiday with my children. We went to Disneyland.
It certainly wasn’t my first choice but, during the planning, it suddenly became my only choice. My children, in their mid-teens, were thrilled!
As best laid plans are wont to do, it did, of course, become a comedy of errors. From delayed flights to lost luggage to disappearing return flights, it seemed every time we turned around, chaos was on our heels. But like Four Musketeers on the adventure of a lifetime, we kept our focus, we maintained our senses of humour, we utilized every moment of every day.
We rode every ride we could find (well, the children did); we discovered ESPN Zone and Legoland and posed with the REAL Mickey Mouse; we partied like besties at Y Arriba! (really! as long as I wore the parent wristband, the children were allowed in the bar!)
By the following summer household budgets and summer jobs were a reality and soon after that the children were grown and traveling the globe.
Within a few years, my life was changing lanes and the economy was wreaking its own sort of havoc on my life. Disneyland, to this day, remains one of my very best memories of family togetherness.
What do you do for holidays each year? Do you vacation or staycation?
I am the first to agree that a quiet week in my own home with not a single responsibility in the world is a lovely way to spend a week. A week.
If your answer was staycation, is it a choice or a necessity? What would you do for holidays each year if money was no issue? What would you do for holidays each year if money was no issue and you could work your own business from anywhere in the world?
Now that I have independence in the crosshairs… financial freedom is not just a pipe dream… I have BIG vacations on my mind.
I think I will take my laptop to New Zealand and work my business on the beach in front of my son’s bar – enjoying excellent food and New Zealand wines until my son asks me when my return flight is.
I think I will take my laptop to Spain and work my business in between visits with the out-laws and my daughter and her Spanish partner – until my readers start complaining that my blog posts are becoming unreadable as they sound a lot like Spanish.
And I know I am going back to Disneyland. And I really will try to work my business… in between adventures with my amazing young grandson and his mother. J

Excellent post Agnes and you got me thinking there. My memories of holidays are when I get to go to South Africa to see my children and grandchildren. I am now working towards going again to see my great grandchildren ! Hopefully next year as it has been a long time since I was there and have never seen my grandaughters twins.
That sounds like a huge incentive for an on-line business, Merle. I was actually thinking of you and your great-grandchildren as I wrote parts of my post. So many people would just have to remain sad about their inability to afford such a trip, despite its value.
I had some great family holidays growing up. We didn’t go abroad, sometimes we didn’t even leave Wales but we had a wonderful time just the three of us. I’d not change them for the world.
As adults we often forget how even the simple things can create life-long memories for children, Rachael! and you will always have those memories!
Love this post Agnes. One of my dream vacations is to take my children and grandchildren to DisneyWorld for 2 weeks.That would be 9 of us. The other would be to go to Italy for a couple of weeks.

I want to go to Ukraine to see Tanya. Because of the difficulties I faced earlier this year I’ve not been able to go. My sons are all grown up so that’s my goal as soon as I can make it!

I have a slightly different slant on this Agnes. We are looking to emigrate rather than vacation! However, as this is taking sooo long, we may well have to take another vacation before finally making the move.
I can’t remember the last real vacation I had – yes I travel a lot with the boys and their golf but my idea of a holiday isn;t walking the cart path of a golf course and driving kids from A to B, often with 5am rises.
A week at home would be lovely – I live on a lake and could use the week zipping around on my boat or drinking a nice glass (or two) of wine as the sun sets…
One day soon hopefully….

I’ve certainly have done my share staycations over the past few years. My wife and I are shooting for Hawaii as our next getaway (hopefully within the next several months)…Italy would be my next choice…would love to see all the old architecture there :O)

Great post, I’ve been lucky, I’ve traveled to many countries, both for work and pleasure. I’m Canadian and lived in Australia for 3 years.
Living and working in Australia for a Canadian company meant many trips back and forth so when I finally came back to Canada to live I wanted grounded vacations.
Now I starting to want to travel again. Not this year, but in the future I can see a few more plane rides.
It’s all about having the choice, Heather!! and plane rides go to distant destinations and to nearby locations, so it’s the best of both!
